WIW: denim skirt ensemble

My denim skirt isn't a traditional jean skirt, but it is a pencil skirt. It has layers across the front panel, sort of mermaid-style. I tried Angie's formula today and felt not exactly fab, but okay for a day of work. The ensembles give me something new to try, and that's fun, even when I come up with an outfit I might not want to repeat piece for piece.

The outfit (worn to work):
Denim layered pencil skirt (Tribal); silk reptile print tee in blues, green, black, and ivory (made by me); black boiled wool bomber with faux leather sleeves (Halogen); black loafers (Munro, Kimi); black leather satchel (Elliott Lucca, Olvera); blue stone teardrop earrings; indigo fishnets (Commando). I wore the bomber jacket as outerwear and took it off at work.

How might I tweak this outfit to make it one I'd want to wear next time?

Comments and suggestions are welcome! Thanks for looking.

I am not a big denim skirt fan, but this skirt doesn't read "denim" to me at all. Indeed, I really like it! I think the outfit looks fab exactly as it is, although I could easily see this skirt paired with a white tank or shell of some sort and a black jacket, or with a red sweater or a cobalt silk shirt. I think booties would also look great with an outfit like this.

    Thanks for the ideas, Echo!

How about a front tuck and edgier shoes?

Gorgeous top.  I want to see it with jeans now, it's got so much interest.

For this skirt, I'm thinking a shorter top, perhaps a banded sweatshirt type top or a cropped top.  Also I echo AJ in edgier shoes.

Nice top, I love that you made this yourself! I like the colors. In terms of pairing it with this skirt, I agree with CocoLion, I think perhaps a shorter top would look nice.

I also like the jacket, I think it works well with the skirt. I'm on the fence about the shoes. I like them and think changing them would just give a different vibe, not necessarily better than the current look.

Great look with unique pieces - you clever creator of your own clothes. How about a little semi tuck in front, Sharon?

I'm sticking up for the shoes because I know how insanely comfy they are - and black photographs badly. Booties, will look super duper too. xo

Gorgeous top, Firecracker! The tonal look appeals to me a great deal, I concur that the top is a proportionally overlong. Shorter top or some creative top tucking should resolve that.

As a loafer with dress/skirt wearer, I'm ok with the shoes and the dark hose supports the long line.

Thanks, everyone! I did try semi-tucking the top, but I didn't feel it worked too well. Maybe the top isn't loose enough for it to work? I semi-tuck the top in low-rise pants, but with this skirt higher up (not at my true waist, which is somewhere in the stratosphere), I'm just not sure. Maybe I just need to get used to it. Maybe I could do a full tuck and then blouse a lot out--for a faux-welt effect!

Since the waist is high on the skirt, maybe it would work with a cropped top, probably over a thin tucked tonal layer. I like the outfit best without the topper, maybe because the print is so much fun. Would an assymmetrical vest work over the tee?

The top is gorgeous, and I like it with the skirt. The loafers look OK, but how about a pair of booties?

I'd like to see the skirt taper a bit more. You have lovely shapely legs to highlight!

Lovely outfit, that is one gorgeous top.  I am intrigued by the idea of the faux-welt, as I feel it might look better with a slightly shorter top.

What a stunning top! And where on earth did you find silk in that cool pattern? I can never seem to achieve a semi-tuck with a pencil skirt either, but Suz has mastered it. Maybe she will chime in. I think that's all this outfit needs. :)

    Thanks, everyone!

Claire, I'll have to look at some of Suz's outifts and see how she does the semi-tuck with a skirt at the waist.

I'm beginning to suspect I don't have the right tops to wear with skirts. I do have other shoes. When I saw loafers in Angie's ensemble, I wanted to give mine a try with the outfit, as I'm not getting enough wear out of them.

And, I have soooo much trouble wearing skirts, and yet I keep trying. So thanks for the help!

Both pieces are great - I think overall the outfit looks wonderful. Personal preferences for myself is that I would not wear the two together.
I would showcase the texture of the skirt by wearing a simpler top so the skirt is the star. I also think a slightly shorter top like everyone stated.
The shirt is fab and should be the star of it's own outfit. I also agree with the shirt being a little longer it needs a more tapered pencil skirt or skinnies with it.

I don't now how I mssed tis! I quite like it--the mix of pattern and textures is quite interesting. You've gotten some great suggestions on how to remix this. I'd love to see all the pieces again.
