WIW: transition-wear in olives and grays

It looks like spring, and there's a chill in the air. I alternate between wanting to break out some spring looks and wanting to wear my boots while I still can. Here are a few outfits that straddle the seasonal divide I'm feeling right now.

The outfits:
1-3 (worn to work): gray, black, wine, olive, and teal scroll-print sweater dress (Nally & Millie); black tights; olive wool crinkly gauze drapey vest (made by me); olive distressed suede boots (Donald J. Pliner, Devi #); black packable raincoat (Cole Haan); black satchel (Elliott Lucca, Olvera).

4-7 (worn to work): beige and gray flower print cotton and silk voile blouse (Halogen); charcoal ponte knit bootcut trousers (NYDJ); charcoal metallic tweed collarless jacket (made by me); black suede booties (Paul Green, Barbie). Do you prefer the blouse tucked (4-5) or untucked (6-7)? Not pictured: same coat and satchel as above.

8-10 (worn for a day off and teaching a sewing class): olive boyfriend chinos (Eddie Bauer); mauve, gray, and olive print felted wool cap-sleeve sweatshirt (made by me), over ivory long-sleeved tee (Caslon); pewter cutout belt (Fossil); pewter metallic suede high-top sneakers (Paul Green); taupe trench (Calvin Klein); taupe shoulder bag (Aunts & Uncles).

Thanks for looking! I welcome your feedback and thoughts.

I love #1! Your legs go on forever in the bootcut trousers and you look sporty stylish with that beautiful sweatshirt in #3!

  • Caro in Oz replied 9 years ago

LOVE the jacket in #4 - 7 - you are very clever!
If I had to pick I'd say tucked but just to be difficult :) could you try a semi-tuck?

These outfits are all great, I don't see anything I would change. I prefer the shirt untucked, the silky fabric sets off the jacket which is beautiful. The sweatshirt is fantastic too.

Sharan I hear you on the season conundrum and have come to the conclusion that this is a Good Problem for us to have since normally we'd be getting buckets of rain right now ;) I'm sticking to mostly wintery footwear because my hunch is we'll have another warm summer (hopefully that doesn't backfire!) but working in some of my lighter-weight pieces. Not a bad idea to get some extra wear from winter faves while we can though, it's certainly still cool out!

Totally love #1-3 on you. Fab silhouette and looks texturally moodily interesting. I'm leaning towards tucked with #4-7 because I like the cleaner jacket line but both work to me; untucked is a little more casual feeling, and tucked is crisper. The casual outfit in #8-9 looks good too, interesting color combo.

I can hardly get past #1... I love olive as a neutral and you've woven together your usual rich mix of pattern (tapestry-like scroll print!) and texture (gauzy wool! distressed suede!). The long vest is genius because it shows off the pattern on the sleeves, which would have been lost with a jacket or cardigan. I just keep going back to the pictures to examine the subtleties in that outfit.

In #2, again I'm surprised that the jacket is your handiwork -- thought it might be some vintage Chanel-esque piece you discovered. Except I like the shape much better than the classic Chanel jacket. Metallic tweed, oh yes. And I prefer the blouse tucked to show off the jacket's exquisite construction, especially from the back. (Maybe add a belt? I don't do tucked/belted, so I'm at a loss here.)

Love the olive trousers in #3, softened with the sweatshirt and ivory tee. Again, the two-toned sleeves ... they're a detail I never would have thought about in an outfit, but they add another layer to your compositions.

Really liked #1 -- right out of the gate. Pattern is wonderful and this really helps me with my pattern averse disease. I love the tones, the subtlety, the geometry, feels modern but with a very long life. Boots look wonderful. Great long line (which you know I love). Silhouette feels great. Great colors on you.

4-7 -- Prefer tucked. Nice silhouette -- everything works very well but I wish the blouse was a bit more contemporary. But another very nice look.

8-10 I like all of these pieces but I am very partial to you either having some darkness to your outfits or when you do medium/light tones -- it needs to have the same character of color as that pistachio. That means the lighter color needs to be clear and have some life. This outfit reads almost too all over neutral in my eyes. I'd be happier if these pants were dark olive. I think that would be the contrast that I'm seeking. I'm not sure if I'm getting this right but this is my leaning.

#1 and 3 are fantastic.  For #2, I prefer the blouse untucked, tucked the look is more business-y.  So I guess it would depend on the occasion.

    Thanks, shevia!
Caro, I tried a semi-tuck but didn't photograph it. I like the tuck in front and untucked in the back, but it was the in-between part that I didn't really like with the jacket.

Thanks, everyone, for your votes on tucking versus untucking the blouse. I wore it tucked, because I thought it was probably more flattering. But I kind of liked it untucked, and now with your encouragement I'd wear it that way next time, for a change and a more casual look.

Aida, yes, no rain is nice. It made outfit 4-7 possible! I've been wanting to wear that one for a while and needed the right day.

gauche, I have been wanting to wear the vest with that dress in outfit 1 for a while, too--but I had to make the vest first! Finally did it. I'm flattered you thought the jacket was a vintage designer piece. You can't see it in these photos, but the trim on the yokes in front and back is zipper teeth from a zipper that matches the one down the front of the jacket.

AM, glad you liked the first one. I adore the print in that dress, too. I was much more into scroll prints when I got it several years ago, but I still like it. In the last outfit, maybe there's just not enough contrast. The colors, per se, are typically good ones for me.

well you've had another great week. my fav is #8. i'm mixed about the tucking/untucking for #4-7, from the front i prefer the tucked, but from the back, untucked, so i guess which ever makes you happier works. #1love the dress, but I'd like to see it without the vest.

Sharan, you have a unique and well co-ordinated wardrobe, and are funkier by the WIW. Look at you rocking your Sporty Luxe in #8. Very well done.

The bootcut trouser look is quite different for you - and you wear it with as much sass as you do #1, which is more girly and arty. FABULOUS.

The weather is GORGEOUS isn't it. Sunny and cool, but NOT freezing and rainy. I'll take it.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

kkards, thanks! The dress is nice on its own, but I rarely wear it that way. I feel undressed without another layer, for some reason. And if I'm wearing it to work, I like to add something that I've made. I usually wear a shrug over it.

Thanks, Angie! I like "funkier by the WIW"! Yup, my sporty luxe side came out again. I don't know if I would have tried fashion sneakers if not for YLF.

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Well, that first one is just fantastic.  Flattering in every way.  And the second one is just... fantastic.  I prefer the shirt untucked.  And the the third... well, I think you know what I'm going to say.  Love the idea of "funkier by the WIW".  So true!

Jealous of your weather.  Got another 5cm of snow last night...

Firecracker, your outfits are such a feast for the eyes - you must get comments on them from random strangers in the street!

#1-3 Fab dress - love the pattern. You wear these darker, sophisticated tones so well.

#4-7 Well, I can hardly look at anything other than that amazing gem of a jacket. The two different fabrics, those bands near the bottom edge, the split cuff detail visible in the shot of the back, the black trim matching the front zipper ... I'm wondering what the lining (if any) is like. slight preference for shirt untucked.

#8-9 These gentler but still sophisticated shades suit you, just as do the darker ones in the first outfit (aren't you lucky!).  Calm and relaxed vibe - lovely.

  • kellygirl replied 9 years ago

I can't get over that jacket! You are incredibly talented! Love it with the blouse untucked (are you surprised?)--lots of layering interest. Love the dress with the tall boots too. I really want to try this look--maybe for a lunch with the ladies. I find dresses impractical for my day to day. The casual layered tee look in the last set steals my heart. I would totally wear this. You look amazing in all of these! I wish you had more sunlight up there--I would love some pics of your outfits in natural light! I feel like I'm not able to appreciate all of the details!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

Thanks, Elizabeth. I feel for you with all the snow this season!

Ruth, thanks for your kind words. The jacket is lined with gray silky polyester.

Kelly, you're so sweet. I don't think I'd get many photos taken if I did them outdoors. But I probably could get a lamp to improve my indoor shots. :)
