WIW: summer top and jeans

Today I'm wearing a summer top and the step-hem jeans I got at the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. The top is a sleeveless shell that I made with a tie at the neck, made out of a soft rayon woven fabric with orange diamonds printed on a soft blue-gray background. I knew the fabric would go with my bright coral-orange cardigan and platform sandals, though this morning it was a little chilly for the sandals, so I wore gray closed-toe shoes instead.

Here's the outfit, worn for a day off: gray and orange diamond-print sleeveless tie-neck top (made by me); blue step-hem cropped flare jeans (Mother, Insider crop step-hem); bright coral 3/4-sleeved cardigan (Halogen); light gray Mary Janes (Think!) or orange platform sandals (Kork Ease, Austin); medium-gray cross-body bag (Olbrish). Also included a close-up of the fabric for you!

Thanks for looking! I appreciate any thoughts you wish to share.

Both are fab! I need to learn to sew like you, you make such beautiful garments.

  • lozz_oz replied 6 years ago

Fabulous combinations! You inspire me to get some of my fabric out + start sewing again.

Great outfit, and it's adorable on you! Both shoe options are terrific. The way the platforms pick up the color of the sweater is great, but I am dying for those grey Mary Janes... did you get them recently enough that they might still be available... ?

Fabulous color combination I love the vibrance of the orange against the serene cool of the grey --- This outfit has a great mix of classic and updated elements:  slightly Euro shoes and step hems.  You look terrific!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 6 years ago

Beth Ann, thank you! It is a mix, isn't it? I think it's a mix of different things I like, and you put names to them for me!

Berkeley Girl, I got the shoes a couple of years go, okay, maybe three. It's a style that Think! keeps making year after year, though. Here's a similar pair, currently available on Zappos (also in Finds below)--and I have the same style in black, which I've had several years longer than the gray pair that I wore today.

Thanks, Joyce! The top is a pattern I have made many times before. I tend to get some styles that I repeat again and again. So if you found one pattern that is easy and works well, you can get started pretty quickly.

    Thanks, Shevia!

Berkeley Girl, here is the same shoe, different color, at 6pm.com.

    Go for it, loz_oz!

    Thanks, AndiB!

Great outfit. And your hair is looking fab.

You are such a clotheshorse! The jeans look much better on you than the model. The top lies perfectly over them. Perfect proportions.

Can you tell I love this on you?

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 6 years ago

    Wow, nicely done!

I actually like the pic with grey shoes better. Something about your posture in them.

  • Chris987 replied 6 years ago

Lovely outfit ! Grey and orange is such a fab color combination. I especially like the pattern mixing of the small print in the top and the "striped " effect of the orange sandals. Your home-made garments are always such gorgeous designs! I used to sew a lot, perhaps you will inspire me to find a simple dress pattern to make fit well and then use over and over.....and i must check out the think! brand.....I had one pair a few years ago that was a random thing but I loved them and they lasted a long time.

Great outfit! Love the step hem of the jeans and the fun shoes. And the talent of making your own clothes of course!

  • anne replied 6 years ago

Really lovely. The top has a 60s look about it

  • JAileen replied 6 years ago

I love the touches of orange. The top is perfect for summer.

  • Bijou replied 6 years ago

I love this on you - the top and jeans are a great combination. I really love the orange sandals with this, perfect for summer.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 6 years ago

Gingko, Laura, and Brooklyn, thanks for your compliments on my hair. I just got it trimmed, and it seems to have perked up!

Chris, I hadn't thought about the stripe effect of the sandals--good observation. For me one of the tricks to sewing is staying with less fitted and less tailored pieces, so it's easier to get a garment I'll want to wear. I generally like to make knit tops because they are so simple and forgiving.

Anne, yes, I thought the same thing about the 60s vibe. I don't know if it's the print or the style, or a bit of both.

Thanks to all for your nice comments!

I love this look on you especially with the orange sandals.  The print of the top is a bit 60s looking.

I love the jeans. The slight flare at the bottom is so good on you.
I love the top and the complimentary cardigan. A super graphic quality.
