WIW: transitional dressing in arty tees

A couple of work outfits here. Coincidentally, both feature raglan-sleeved tees made from the same pattern. The tee in the second outfit reflects an alteration to the pattern that added some fabric to the back in a pleat, giving it a swing shape. I really like both of these t-shirts, but the first one is especially fun to me. I always get compliments on it. These outfits feel like transitional dressing: wearing some summer pieces while leaning toward fall. I wore the jackets for the cool mornings, but didn't need them later in the day.

The outfits:

1-3 (worn to work Sunday): olive chinos with brass studs down the sides (Lucky); mixed-print raglan sleeve tee in purple, green, off-white, teal, red burnout print and charcoal and ivory stripe (made by me); stone and cream leather belt (Annette Goertz); brass and silver earrings and brass and silver bead bracelet (Lucky); stone hemp zip up hooded jacket (Layers Squared); gray platform sandals (DV by Dolce Vita); taupe hobo bag (Aunts & Uncles).

4-6 (worn to work Monday): stone linen trousers (NYDJ, Wylie); purple, ivory, and black mixed zebra print and striped raglan-sleeved swing tee (made by me); pewter leather cutout belt (Fossil); olive jacket (Laundry by Shelli Segal); taupe metallic suede high-top sneakers (Paul Green); taupe hobo bag (Aunts & Uncles).

Thanks for looking! All comments and suggestions welcome.

Wow, very cute! I totally get you on the first tee being soooo appealing. All outfits are fun and dynamic here.

LOVE the first outfit.  Looks simultaneously fun, bad-ass, and chic.  I would like to see shoes that book-end the look a little more, but I'm unable to come up with a concrete suggestion at the moment.  I got a sewing machine for Christmas (still in the box, sadly) and your handmade clothes are so inspiring!  And I'm buying that belt.

I can see why you get compliments on that first top- it's super fun!
You are the queen of arty tops, and that "made by me" brand is an enviable one for sure!

Those tees are so flattering and fun! I love the pattern mixing in the first one but there is something about the second one that is just as enchanting! You are so talented and creative. Gorgeous outfits too!

That first top is so much fun! I love how it completely changes character when you wear a topper. It must give you an inner chuckle to pull the topper off and reveal those striped sleeves. Really great pattern on you!

I equally love the fluidity and ease of the second outfit. That, too, seems like a pattern made especially for you  (not only BY you!). It is dynamic but not busy. Lovely.

Great tops & outfits & what Suz said about when you remove the topper.
You are making me think about sewing again :)

That tshirt is fantastic in both variations . Love it, and it suits you to a tee - yes, pun intended.

And - you need to be wearing the olive pants as often as possible!  Super flattering and what a great cut on you - wow , you look dynamite in this trim style:)

Lastly , you are killing me with your MBM pieces. This fall, I am dusting off the sewing machine and serger and getting down to business.

Love the tees and the pics remind me why I do love a Raglan Sleeve!
These olive chinos are a perfect fit on you.  I would love some pants that fit me as well.

I love how the addition of a topper to the tee in #1 completely changes the look. Take off the topper, and those fun sleeves are revealed! Both outfits are fab. May I ask, where do you purchase your fabrics?

  • Ingunn replied 10 years ago

Yes, I would like to know that, too! Making my own clothes came to a halt long ago when the sources for good fabrics dried up. I love your tees, they are equally fab and seem so versatile. I also adore the olive jacket.

Joining the love for your tops, especially the first one!

Fab T's!!! Great transitional looks, Firecracker. I like the stone topper in the first outfit as well. Very nice!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Very fun uber casual looks. You look extra cheeky in the wide casual pants in #4. Might be nicer to pair with a shorter jacket to showcase the line of the pants.

You are Arty Casual Chic in #3. That's just your look. Nicely done. xo

Ooohhh ... Both tops are so much fun! Obviously you get complimented :). I love both outfits on you.

Thanks, everyone! You are so kind and encouraging.

Suz and Karie, I like your take on the surprise sleeves when the topper is removed. I often feel a little sad to cover up the sleeves, because so often I need to do so, for warmth! But it is fun to reveal them, and I should just think of that fun surprise.

Caro and Lisap, I'm flattered to be a sewing inspiration. I hope you do return to it! When I returned to sewing clothes after a lot of years when I just sewed the occasional curtain or so, I started with a vest as a kind of manageable yet interesting project.

Lisap and Kiwigal, thanks for your comments on the pants fit. I was actually quesitoning it with the photos, and I don't find the back view very flattering. But the fit feels good. They are the Sienna, a boyfriend fit from Lucky, if you want to look for them--forgot to put the specific cut in my description.

Karie and Ingunn, I get a lot of my fabrics online, though there are some very nice local fabric stores that I frequent as well. The fabrics for tee 1 came from The Sewing Workshop online and from Pacific Fabrics (local store). Those for tee 2 came from Marcy Tilton online. I also like Emma Onesock online.

I love this. You are becoming a style muse for me.

The combination of those olive chinos and the platform sandals is just fabulous on you and I like both tees, particularly the animal print version. Great casual outfits.

  • viva replied 10 years ago

I absolutely love that zebra top. I would try it on in a second if I saw it in a store, and I would buy it if it looked as good on me as it does on you. It's really fantastic. You are supremely skilled.

misapb, re: your suggestion, I'm thinking a black and white sandal would be fun with outfit number 1. Or a bone sandal on a black platform, that kind of thing? Not that I have anything like that, but it's fun to envision.

Angie, thanks for your admiration and suggestion! I like the idea of a short jacket with the pants.

Nebraskim, no way! Really? that's so sweet of you--thank you!
