WIW: a Shannon copy & a new dress

Transcona Shannon's post on a column of white with navy lace inspired me to try a similar outfit to hers. I originally thought I would wear metallic shoes (inspired by hers with the metallic straps) and belt, but then I decided to go with my denim flats and coordinating tan belt.

1-2: Wearing today, for the day off, my Shannon copy outfit: white cropped boyfriend jeans (Eddie Bauer); ivory scoop neck long-sleeved tee (Caslon); navy chenille lace hoodie (made by me); denim ballet flats (AGL); navy and tan bag (Dooney & Bourke); tan belt (Trafalgar); silver and brass dangle concentric hoop earrings (Lucky).
This outfit may be more Shannon than it is me, but it's a way to wear this hoodie that has been a bit of an orphan.

3: Worn Monday, for work: gray and black brush stroke print dress with front drapes and pockets (made by me); black and gray blurry puzzle print mesh knit cardigan (made by me); black sling-back Mary Janes (Think! Aida); silvery bib necklace (?); gunmetal faceted drop earrings (Dabby Reid).

The dress and cardigan are from a Vogue pattern by Marcy Tilton, one of my favorite pattern designers. Marcy suggested these fabrics for me at the Sewing Expo in Puyallup, Washington, this year; I bought them from her there. Originally I bought the pattern for the cardi and then decided I'd try the dress, too. I'm not sure about this style for me, or about the two of them together on me. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Thanks for looking! I always like to hear your suggestions and ideas.

I did a rapid click through and have fainted at number 3 - "not sure?" - be very sure that this is an incredible outfit that you wear to perfection!

I really like the first outfit. You put your own spin on Shannon's outfit. Tan belt and navy and tan bag make the oufit so interesting. Great footwear choice too.

Your column of white is lovely, and I reaaaallly like the dress.

The chenille hoodie looks great with the white column of color, nice sleeve length. I'm wowed by the dress outfit though... you look amazing!

  • texstyle replied 9 years ago

The first outfit is great, the dress is Fantastic on you in every way!

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the dress love. I didn't do a good job of photographing it; I think it looks better IRL. Maybe it's a movement thing, too. Yet, when I finished the dress, I felt I probably wouldn't make it again--it just didn't wow me. The style may be growing on me, though.

I always forget about Eddie Bauer! Tomorrow I'm going to check out those cute white pants of yours. Really nice.

Fun copycat look! It does skew a little more classic for you, but still looks great. The lace hoodie (there's some Luxe Sporty!) brings it back to you quite nice. #3 has a very cool avante garde quality to it. I'd love to see both pieces separated in outfits that highlight their interesting cuts, but from what I can tell here they look great together.

(And I have to say every time I read the namesake shoes I keep thinking you're telling me to Think! ;) )

Wow, that dress is amazing!!! And I love the Shannon-inspired looks too :)

  • MsLuna replied 9 years ago

Outfit #3 really stood out to me. I like the worn graphic print, the grey and the play on texture, print and proportion. I like the way you accessorized as well.

Love the topper in outfit #1! Is that lace or a burnt out velvet fabric?

  • Transcona Shannon replied 9 years ago

Oh my Firecracker - I'm incredibly flattered! Of course you know I love the white and navy outfit:) I hope you enjoyed wearing it even if it isn't quite your style. It looks fab on you.

    THE DRESS!!! Wow. Speechless...

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

Aida, how funny! Thanks for your thoughtful comments, too. I will wear the pieces separately, for sure. I'm thinking the cardigan could go nicely with my harem pants.

MsKatieKat, the fabric in #1 topper is a lace weave, rather than burnout. It's quite chunky, though; not your typical lace.

Thanks, Shannon! I am inspired by your style.

I continue to be astounded by your sewing skills. If only I could do that.
Love 1/2 but of course it is something I would totally wear! Dress and jacket are amazing on you! My only 'ponder' on 3 is how would it look without that amazing necklace?

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

The Shannon copy is lovely on you,but the dress and jacket are exceptional. I love the style and these patterns together. The smokey watercolor prints look beautiful with your hair. It looks great like you are wearing it in this photo.

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

Love them both. The colour of the second outfit really sings with your complexion and hair. Love the column of white! Fab!

  • Runcarla replied 9 years ago

Did a double take at #3 (so beautiful) and then read your post. This def works. Please 'keep' and wear again.

I'll keep it short, you gorgeous creature:

    #1 and #2 - Killer

    # - Killer to the power of Killer

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

Pil, thanks and good question about the necklace. I liked the dress without it, but the neckline felt like quite a big scoop, so I chose this necklace to fill it in.

Joy and jackiec, thanks for your thoughts on pattern, style, and color!

Carla and Angie, you're so sweet--thank you!

I can tell that the dress is ten times more amazing in movement. It looks completely "you." What an amazing creative sewist you are.

I love #1, too! That is a fantastic hoodie. It adds just enough eclectic to the classic look to make it feel right for your style.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

Thanks, Suz! I am hoping that posting more will help me learn what is "me." It's hard to see myself objectively.

  • AJ replied 9 years ago

#1 is great! The lace hoodie is FAB! If you decide to jump on the white sneaker trend, that would look good with this outfit as well.

The way the light highlights your face adds even more great drama to the dress outfit! I luv drapey pockets!

I'm surprised to read that you are still figuring out your style. You sew such amazing arty pieces with texture and details then you style them with classics to add that bit of structure and elegance. It all adds up to lovely outfits in my book!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

Thanks, AJ! I think that in sewing I get drawn in by new designs (and by fabrics), and I don't really think about wardrobe holes or those kinds of practical things. I do try to think of ways I can wear something before going to the trouble to make it. But I am not sure that thought process necessarily produces a coherent style or a coordinated wardrobe.

  • lyn67 replied 9 years ago

Wow, is the dress a DIY project??? Drape are not  easy to so perfectly!

It's an awesome  item, love the color(and the bit of shine) with your hair!

    YLF in all!!!
