Shorts options & today's outfit

On my cutoff outfit post earlier this week, CocoLion suggested I try shorter shorts. I dug around in my shorts drawer and found a couple of pairs I had hung onto. They are both pull-on styles, in linen or linen/cotton blend, with wider legs. I wondered if they could pass for the current short culotte styles we're seeing.
They are not pressed, so try to look beyond the fold marks from being stashed in the drawer.

I tried them on with the rest of my outfit today, shown here as well.

1-3: stone linen pull-on shorts (J.Jill); tiered tank in butter cream (CAbi); olive 3/4-sleeved cardigan (Halogen); brass and silver bead wrap bracelet (Lucky); arty dangle earrings with ceramic bead and silver disk; ivory platform sandals with ring detail (Naot)
4-6: black linen/cotton pull-on shorts with drawstring (made by me), with same as above.
7-9: as worn today, with DIY cutoffs (Lucky); cream belt; and taupe-gray hobo bag (Aunts & Uncles).

Should I revive either of these linen shorts, and wear them out of the house? If so, I could put together outfits that go better than these tops with them. Don't worry about offending me on the ones I made, either--they got plenty of wear, back when they were in style. I was a little heavier then, too, and filled them out a bit more.

Thanks for looking and sharing your thoughts.

I think they all look great - and my favourite is the denim pair with the ruffly top. You have the legs for shorter shorts - so take advantage! I think the linen shorts are perfect weekend running around pieces.

    Thanks, Lisa!

You have great legs that are made for shorter shorts.  I think I'd prefer these to be a little slimmer.   Could you take them in a little bit on the sides?

Thanks, Isis. I'm not sure I'd go to the trouble to alter these; I'd probably get or make others, but your feedback is helpful.

I prefer the black shorts that you made over the lighter pair.

I'm wondering how your cutoffs look if cuffed above your knees?

Thanks, AJ. I tried that but I think I liked the longer length better, because I rolled them back down. I'll have to take a photo.

I love both of the shorts just the way they are! But then, your outfits with them (wide shorts + interesting tank + cardigan) are my ideal high summer look, so I'm probably biased. ;)

I've noticed people seem to have more poison eyes when it comes to shorts than most wardrobe items. I love how shorter, wider shorts like these look and have a poison eye for traditional bermudas (like Diana I think!). But it seems a lot of the forum prefers shorts that fit more closely to the thigh. So it might end up coming down to your personal preferences!

I like the black shorts, as is. The tan ones, read as camping gear to me.

E, I have been inspired by your shorts looks, so I appreciate your input here. I wasn't sure if this was quite the current look, but glad to hear it works in your eyes.

Anna, thank you--it's great to have your take, with your fashion sense.

Isis, looking again at the pictures myself, I think I could take in the upper part of the shorts while leaving the width at the hem. Then they wouldn't be so wide over my hips. That's an alteration I would do. (I just don't want to be bothered with taking out a hem to do a side seam on these. I'm a lazy seamstress!)

I really like the shorter length and agree the darker color is better - at least with this outfit.  I really like shorts in the 7 inch range (that are somewhat slim in fit, but not tight at all)  so a lot of times I buy 9" length and roll them up. My favorite shorts this summer have been my 2 pair of DIY cutoffs. I can roll them to exactly where I want them which is maybe 5" above the knee for me.

I think the style of the short sort of dictates which length works best - at least with my own experiments. I have a pair of dusty red shorts that I love in color and upper fit but the leg openings are just too wide and I am not just a lazy seamstress, I am a bad seamstress, so they have only been worn one time.

The denim and the black are my favorite. The khakis I am less sure of. Perhaps if they were either a bit slimmer or even more voluminous.
