outfit lab & WIW: cropped pants

Yesterday I made a t-shirt and wanted to wear it to work today. Since I couldn't wear jeans--which it will be easy to pair with-- I settled on wearing it with my cropped dark brown wool pants and a taupe cashmere blend shrug (after many try-ons, not pictured, with other things in my closet).
With this outfit, I tried out different combinations of footwear and semi-tucked versus untucked tee, which I photographed and thought I would share here. I decided to go with the first option pictured, but would be interested in your thoughts about which--if any--of these looks work and why.

The outfit: Dark brown wool cropped pants (made by me); teal key-print tee (made by me); taupe cashmere blend shredded-knit shrug (made by me); with taupe croc-textured booties (Donald J. Pliner, Dalis); brown metallic pointy toe heeled booties (Donald J. Pliner, Tillie); taupe cross-strap flats (Naot, Lan).

Thanks for looking! I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.

    Interesting!!

I love the look you chose and this has a casual elegance about it.
    My second pick is 6.

To my mind I prefer both booties over the crossover shoes.  I prefer untucked over tucked - but this is probably my own slight poison eye - I almost always prefer untucked on women.  I can see that tucked is leg lengthening but it is also more body shortening.   However I think you could do either.

Great tee too - the colours, the fit and the pattern are all super.

I prefer 1,3,then 2. Both for the darker color with the pants and the bulkiness ( for lack of a better description of the shoe).

I think I prefer #1 also, but what I really notice is how great the colors and textures layer from the back (#5 and #8).  Subtle, unexpected, brilliant.

Ooh this is lovely! I think your first choice in foot wear is splendid. Something about the boot shaft height really makes the outfit shine--and the cool detailing on the boots. I like the maryjanes next best. Proportions and colors are fantastic!

You chose wisely.  I think the cropped pants require the footwear with higher shafts, and those are the highest between the three choices.

I would love the dressy DJPs in this outfit if the pants were a bit longer.

I am impressed with how many knits you make.

    Oh wow, love Zoutfit Lab!
    Super colors.
Reworking the cropped pants. You know I struggld with lengths, for my eye vs " fashion".

Thes pants seem to go along with the higher shaft bootie trend, so, moving away from the open vamp look. Then a matter of where boot ends and pants fall- tgat has always been my dilemma. . I would try with these boots or other boots with a bit of skin showing. For that I like the top tucked or a boxy top.
These are hard proportions for me to get right- working with my plaid Anthro pants as you know.

I agree that the styling you chose was the best choice. I like the higher shaft booties with the pants. The cross-strap flats are my least favorite of the three with the pants.

    As Janet said.  :)

  • Tania replied 8 years ago

Number one is my favorite, because of the higher shaft booties with these pants.

  • Windchime replied 8 years ago

I definitely prefer one of the darker footwear options. The pants look super cute on you; great fall outfit!

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

I like #1 best because of the higher shaft on the bootie and the low contrast colouring with your crops. Those proportions look best to my eye. VERY trendy. WELL DONE. Nice tee and fun pants, Sharan.

Thanks, everyone! Looks like what I wore out of the house was the clear favorite. I think it would be nice to have some higher shaft booties that have a more fitted top, but I don't have any yet, and I'm not itching to buy any at the moment. So these are the best I've got. Glad they serve the purpose!

unfrumped, I agree a tucked or cropped top would be good with this look, too. I was surprised that I had a slight preference for the tee untucked in this case. kiwigal's observation about lengthening the torso versus lengthening the legs is so true; maybe I just liked the longer torso look this time.

    #1/2 is my favorite too!

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Thank you so much for sharing your photos with us. I love these outfit labs and learn so much from looking at the proportions. I think you chose well -- 1/2 is gorgeous in its subtle blending of tones and the proportions of the booties seem right here. I also quite like #7 with the Pliners, but maybe I am just biased because I have those booties, too! :)

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

Suz, I liked the shirt tucked with the Tillie booties, too, for some reason.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

I think the Pliners cut off the leg a bit more because of the way they go straight across. Whereas the Dalis boot comes up higher and has that slight (flattering) dip in front. So with Pliers, it's more flattering to have the top tucked because it gives the legs back some of their length? Anyway, to my eye it works well.

Wow, a whole outfit that you made! You're so talented! Do you find yourself sewing more than buying?

I like the first shoe choice best. YLF!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

AJ, thank you! I still buy the majority of what I wear. I don't make jeans, and I don't make that many pants, and I pretty much live in jeans and pants.

  • Carole replied 8 years ago

Wow, aren't you talented! That shrug...love! And you made the crops and T, too..amazing:)

Love the boots you chose to wear...just the right style for the crops!

  • Sara L. replied 8 years ago

I agree with Janet.  The outfit you chose is the best of the three.  All the pieces of this outfit are great.

  • Karie replied 8 years ago

I like the Tille booties slightly better than the Dalis booties, although both are super fabulous.

I love all the made-by-you items! And "Yesterday I made a tee shirt" - I would have to say, "It took me two weeks to make this tee shirt!"

  • Colette replied 8 years ago

I like this outfit on you and especially prefer the first Pliner booties. I'm in awe at your sewing talents!

  • Runcarla replied 8 years ago

The brown and teal combination is lovely and the crops look like they have a luxurious hand. The wool 'glows'. T-untucked looks best to my eye. I do like the pointy toe booties, and am surprised how nicely the flats bookend the cashmere top. The look you choose is the more upscale, by virtue of the footwear you chose, but all iterations work, so you could repeat this outfit for different occaisions.

  • Tanya replied 8 years ago

Love the color combo and as always, and blown away by your sewing talent.  #1 is my favorite, too.

  • Jenava replied 8 years ago

Gorgeous.  I actually like the Pliner's, but maybe I'm biased because I nearly purchased those same shoes.
