New jeans & more new jeans

Today I got put on my new Everlane Barrel Utility jeans, which had finished line-drying from their initial wash, and I went out shopping.  Inspired by Angie's post and the discussion on Keeping Items that Don't Fit I thought I would look for some new jeans to replace other ill-fitting ones.

The ones I had in mind this time were black. I have dark black and faded black jeans that no longer fit well--3 pairs in all: Banana Republic Ranger Straight (faded black), Levis Wedgie Straight, and Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg (both dark black).

I looked at Madewell first, because they have a deal right now for $30 off a new pair of jeans if you bring in an old pair (any brand) to recycle. Usually they offer this deal at $20 off. So I carried along an old pair. I considered their Darted Barrel-Leg style in washed black. I wasn't sold on them. I liked the mid-rise fit (once I sized down enough--3 down from my Perfect Vintage Wide-Legs, which I think are about one size too large for me now). But I was unsure about the slight bow-legged effect of the style on me. (No pics.)

Next stop: the Levis store. I had in mind just getting a size down in the Wedgie Straights. I tried on the dark black wash like my old ones, and a gray wash that would be more like my BR Rangers. I tried both the Wedgie style and 501. Oddly enough, the Wedgies a size down felt too small and didn't give the look I was after. The 501s, on the other hand, were just right, and they come in longer lengths, so I could get them full length. Score!

Next stop: back to Everlane to see what they had in black. I tried the Mid-Way Jean, which I tried in dark blue the other day but had passed over for the barrel jeans. I tried a size up, but decided the same size as the barrel jeans was the right choice. I also tried the Way-High version (too high for me) and the Cheeky (a better fit), but the wider leg on the Mid-Way won me over. Another score!

Photos from the day. Apologies for the poor quality, but I think even with the bad lighting and focus, the difference in fit may be discernible.

1-2: WIW shopping. New Everlane Barrel Utility jeans, with olive cashmere pullover (Madewell); olive suede booties (LaCanadienne); olive rain jacket (Lauren Ralph Lauren); olive cross-body bag (AllSaints).
3-4: old Levis Wedgie jeans.
5-6: new Levis 501s.
7-8: old Madewell wide-legs.
9-10: new Everlane wide-legs.

I'm feeling good to have these well-fitting basics in my jeans wardrobe!
Jeans are such a staple for my style. I will probably hang on to the
old Levis Wedgie jeans for a while longer, in a holding area in my
closet, where they don't interfere with my current wardrobe. It has been
about a year since my size changed from a nutrition and workout
overhaul. The other 2 pairs have enough fit issues it's not worth
keeping them.

I think the 2 new pairs are keepers. Just had to share my excitement, and a look at these styles in case others are considering them.

Great post! So 3-4, the old Levis, are too big you think? I agree. 5-6 are a much better fit.
I can see that 9-10 fit much better than 7-8 as well!
You almost make me want to shop for jeans…I own exactly one pair, the white- wearing them a lot lately, Spring-like.

Thanks, Jenni! Yes, the old Levis look pretty decent from the front, but in the back, you can't really see the full effect of the droop in the photo--haha! I tried wearing them the other day for the first time this season and kept pulling them up when I sat down.

This was timely!  I’m looking at a jeans refresh going into the new year and trying to learn what’s out there…and interesting.

An excellent jeans refresh! The new versions fit really nice compared to the old jeans, which indeed look too big.

We were on the same wavelength today, as I ended up shopping for jeans today as well (I lost 20lbs and all my older jeans are so big a belt can't help them anymore). I tried on some mid rise bootcut Lucky Brand jeans today for something different (because my other new pants and jeans lately have all been high rise wide legs or straight legs).

I haven't worn bootcuts in years, same for mid rises. And I rather liked the Sweet Mid Rise I tried (I'll put them in the finds). I'm debating going back to pick them up in two different washes.

I think it's really fun that your shopping outfit matched an olive jumper and booties. And the barrel Everlane's fit you perfectly! I tried some barrel jeans today and they were all too wide for the barrel and made me look swallowed up. It was comical.

I did replace a pair of Gap Vintage Straights in the same wash I already have because I love the wash. I'll put those in the finds too.

I look forward to seeing your new jeans in action, you had a successful shopping day!

Glad to give you some info for your upcoming refresh, Carla!
Lisa, those look like good choices. Bootcut and straight legs will round out your collection of jeans styles. Barrel or lantern styles can be overwhelming, I agree. It depends where the extra fabric is in the silhouette. These Everlane Barrel Utility jeans are really so slightly shaped, they seem an easy style to wear.

For myself I prefer classic on the bottom. I am wary of barrels. My body shape needs a sleeker bottom. Your barrels are the best fit I have seen. All your jeans are fab. You clearly know what works for your style and shape.

All three new pairs look amazing on you. I understand you are excited - how great to have new perfect essentials! As Jenni said - you almost make me want to shop for new jeans.
    Love your earrings.
    And olive outfit - love!

Wonderful new jean additions, looks like you’ve got a fab collection to enjoy now. I too, just bought some Levis 501s a few months back, such a great classic straight leg jean. I love having a nice variety of silhouettes and washes  to choose from since I wear jeans practically everyday especially in the fall/winter months.

The new jeans look fantastic on you Sharan! I agree with saving the larger size that is in good shape, but nowhere near your closet.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 1 month ago

Thanks, Star. There are some really nice classic styles out there right now. I'm glad that full lengths have become available again, and some variety in rises.
Thank you, Katerina. Those earrings are a favorite!
Dee, we're on the same page. I'm trying to break out into some non-jeans days occasionally, though--haha!
    Thank you, Jaime.

Well done, Sharan! We wear jeans and pants daily till May here in Seattle, don't we ;) - GLAD you found more pairs that fit. I share your excitement!

The new jeans are stellar! Flattering and versatile. You can see how much better they fit in the back, especially. A great feeling to have bottoms that fit.

Good job comparing sizes! You get an A++ for your "new jeans assignment" :)
